Narrative

The 14th Armored Division landed at Marseille (France) on October 30, 1944, and sent elements to guard the Franco-Italian Border on November 14, 1944. The division moved north to Rambervillers (France) on November 20 and the next day, CCA attacked toward Schirmeck to cut German escape routes, contacting the 3rd Infantry Division in that vicinity on November 25. CCA then advanced through Obernai toward Barr on November 27 to block the exits from the Vosges Mountains and battled through Erstein to capture Barr after heavy combat on November 29. The next day, CCA cleared Saint-Pierre and the division then entered the Alsatian Plain.
The division attacked across the Lauter River on December 12 and the next day CCA took Soultz-sous-Forêts. CCA captured Riedseltz on December 15 as CCB seized both Salmbach and Schlerthal. It was then assigned defensive positions running south of Bitche (France) near Neuhoffen and was hit by a strong German attack on January 1, 1945, which forced the division to withdraw. The division attacked from Kuhlendorf to break through to relieve the 79th Infantry Division in Rittershoffen on January 11, but CCA was halted in its first attempt. CCA cleared part of Rittershoffen the next day and on January 13 the division took command of the Hatten-Rittershoffen sector where fierce fighting continued unabated. CCR lost ground at Hatten on January 16.
CCB cleared Schweighausen and part of the Bois de Ohlungen by January 25. It then made a diversionary attack on February 1 east of Oberhoffen and withdrew, and the next day fought into Oberhoffen where it battled past February 4. The division then assumed a defensive posture and rehabilitated.
The division attacked across the Rothbach and Moder Rivers on March 15 and moved forward to exploit breakthroughs. It crossed the Lauter River northeast of Schleithal on March 19, and CCA attacked in the Wissembourg Gap the next day and reached the West Wall. It battled through strong opposition and fought the Battle for Steinfeld on March 20/22 with CCA and CCR. CCB captured Germersheim on the Rhine River on March 23 as CCA seized Schaidt. The division crossed the Rhine near Worms on April 1 and attacked the next day through the lines of the 45th Infantry Division toward Neustadt and Ostheim against diminishing resistance. CCB took Lohr from the retreating German forces on April 3 and captured Gemuenden on April 5. In a rapid drive to Neustadt, CCA took the town on April 7, and then the division assembled. CCA and CCB assembled near Berg on April 17 as CCR maintained its positions along the Creussen-Buchau line until relieved by the 71st Infantry Division.
The division attacked on April 24 and reached the Altmuhl River at Beilngries and Gungolding and proceeded with bridging under heavy German fire. The division crossed on April 26 and reached the Danube River the same day with CCA at Menning, CCB at Neustadt, and CCR at Mailing. It crossed the Danube River on April 28 and CCA advanced rapidly to reach the Isar River at Moosburg the following day. The division then crossed the Isar River at Moosburg on Aril 30 and fought into Landshut. CCB reached the Inn River near Aschau and took the bridge there intact on May 2, 1945. The division was then utilized to process prisoners as hostilities were declared ended on 7 May 45.
