Narrative
The division landed at Le Havre (France) on November 9, 1944, and advance elements moved to the front at Weisslingen (France) on December 5, and attacked toward the Maginot Line. The division relieved the 4-AD on December 7, and CCA took Singling (France) on December 9, 1944. The next day, CCA captured Rohrbach-lès-Bitche (France) and the division reached Bettviller (France) on December 12. The 12-AD reached Utweiler (Germany) by December 21, and then withdrew for rehabilitation.
On January 8, 1945, the 12-AD attacked the Rhine River strongpoint of Herrlisheim (France) with CCB which seized part of the town the next day but became surrounded on January 10. After fierce fighting, the division withdrew from Herrlisheim (France) on January 11 and took up defensive positions west of the Zorn River. It next attacked to reduce the German Gambsheim Bridgehead on January 16 but made little progress as CCB was held up at the river southeast of Rohrwiller (France). CCA managed to get into Herrlisheim on January 17 but the 43-TB was wiped out there. CCA then abandoned the town the next day but suffered very heavy losses.
The division attacked through the 28-ID at Colmar (France) on February 3, 1945, and CCB seized a bridgehead across the Ill River near Sundhoffen (France) and Sainte-Croix-en-Plaine (France). CCA cleared Rouffach (France) on February 5, 1945, and effected a junction with the French forces which sealed the Colmar Pocket in the Vosges Mountains. The division then withdrew to the vicinity of Saint-Avold (France) for rehabilitation, except that CCA assisted the 70-ID near Forbach (France) on March 2/8, 1945.
The division attacked through the lines of the 94-ID on March 18, bypassed Lauterecken (Germany), and reached the Rhine River north of Mannheim (Germany) on March 20. The 12-AD took Ludwigshafen (Germany) on March 21 and Speyer (Germany) as well as Germersheim (Germany) on March 24, thus clearing the Saar Palatinate. The division crossed the Rhine River at Worms (Germany) on March 27/28 and advanced rapidly to take Wuerzburg (Germany) against light resistance. It crossed the Main River at Ochsenfurt (Germany) on April 3, and CCA fought the Battle for Wuerzburg on April 4/5. The division assisted in the reduction of Schweinfurt by blocking the highway to Bamberg on April 11, and the next day encircled the Uffenheim pocket with CCR.
The division assaulted across the Aisch River at Ipsheim on April 14 and advanced with all three Combat Commands in the assault to capture Ansbach on April 18/19. After seizing Feuchtwagen on April 20, the division sped toward the Danube River and CCA captured the bridge at Dillingen before it could be demolished on April 22. The bridgehead was strengthened with the fall of Wertingen on April 24/25. The division then was relieved at the bridgehead by the 3-ID on April 26 and crossed the Lech River> at Landsberg on April 27/29. It cleared the area between the Ammer and Wurm on April 30, and on May 1 drove southeast from Starnberg across the Isar River to reach Inn. Elements crossed the Inn River on May 3 into Austria, and the division was moving toward Innsbruck when placed in reserve the next day. It
engaged in security duty until hostilities were declared ended on May 7, 1945.
