Ypres—“Wipers” in the language of the British Tommies—stands among the most symbolic battlefields of the First World War. Over four years of relentless fighting, the salient became synonymous with attrition, mud, and unyielding sacrifice. Its shattered churches, cratered fields, and endless rows of cemeteries still testify to the scale of the struggle. It was into this landscape, already steeped in blood and memory, that the American 30th Division—“Old Hickory”—entered the line in the late summer of 1918,...

This post presents a curated selection of original U.S. World War II propaganda posters, not photographs. Designed to inform, influence, and mobilize the American public, these graphic works formed a central element of the wartime communication effort. In 2015, many of these posters were digitized and made widely accessible, offering a renewed perspective on the visual language, messaging strategies, and psychological impact employed by the United States during the Second World War....

Pearl Harbor – December 7, 1941
On the morning of December 7, 1941, the United States Pacific Fleet, anchored at Pearl Harbor, was subjected to a sudden and coordinated aerial assault by forces of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The attack, launched in two main waves, was designed to neutralize American naval power in the Pacific and secure Japanese strategic freedom of action across Southeast Asia.
The primary objective was the concentration of battleships along Battleship Row. Vessels such as the...

Over the past year, I have uploaded an extensive collection of historical photographs on Facebook, totaling approximately 10.000 to 15.000 images. These publications generated more than one million views. However, despite this level of visibility, the experience ultimately proved to be a significant investment of time with limited long-term value. For this reason, I have decided to centralize and publish my best photographs directly on my website, where they will be made available for free download. All captions...

A Stunning Glimpse into History: Extra High-Definition USMC World War II Photos from Okinawa 1945
For history enthusiasts, military historians, and anyone fascinated by the epic struggle of World War II, I am excited to share an extraordinary collection of ultra-high-definition photographs from the archives of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). These breathtaking images capture the courage, intensity, and raw reality of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945—one of the...
Unfortunately, I have no choice but to play with Google Maps (which works quite well but does not allow a 100% result) to reproduce 1944 spots with 2023 spots perfectly to allow you to make a comparison. To say the truth, I am waiting to have enough cash to buy a good Nikon or Canon camera (visitors donations) with the objectives required for this kind of work. I am talking here about a sum of almost 10k-€. So in the meantime here is what I propose as images in the Tend and Now category. I am adding a Google...
Here is a series of photographs shot during World War Two in Germany and sent to me by a friend from the USA probably 10 or 12 years ago, so please don't ask me who it was because I simply don't remember. I had promised to make these photos available online for anyone who can use them because this is what the owner of these 'liberated' photos asked me to do. You can copy them if you want but if you use them please credit EUCMH because I put them online in HD and this takes a lot of...

Redstone Arsenal During World War II (1941-1945)
The origins of Redstone Arsenal are deeply tied to World War II and the US military's urgent need for chemical warfare production. The Arsenal was built in response to the growing global conflict and the possibility that chemical weapons might be used in large-scale warfare.
Establishment of Redstone Arsenal
In early 1941, as the United States anticipated its eventual involvement in WWII, the US Army sought new facilities for producing and storing chemical munitions....

A few years ago, just to try it out, I bought a series of archival DVDs. As this was a batch totaling some 2.5 million pages, I expected to receive a bit of everything. This series of images was one of them and, although dating from WWI, I would find it a shame not to post them to make them available to my readers.
The Port of Bandar Shahpur on the Persian Gulf. The voyage from New York around South Africa to the Persian Gulf ports averaged 70 days. When the Mediterranean route became available in 1943, the time was shortened to 42 days. This port, built on swampy land where the river Jarrahi empties into the gulf, has a semitropical climate. Both here and at Khorramshahr much of the work was done at night, and even then the temperature was around a hundred degrees Fahrenheit from March until October. The area is subject to torrential rains in winter. Docking space at both...

Sorting and searching, as well as compiling, Doc Snafu
There were many, especially those who on the front lines had no other occupation than to kill enemies, to cling to something from real life, life before the war, life at home, to find a kid or an animal and become attached to it. The stories on this subject are very numerous. I could start writing all the anecdotes I have collected so far since the early 1970s but I still believe that one picture is worth 1000 words

If you have a fitting caption, don't hesitate and contact me here.

The Beach of Les Andalouses, west of Oran (above). The landings here were unopposed. Eastern part of Oran harbor (below). Early on Nov 8, two British ships (ex-US Coast Guard cutters), carrying about 400 US soldiers, entered the port between the moles shown in the distance. The ships came under point-blank fire from French naval vessels in the harbor and from shore batteries. They returned the fire but were sunk with great loss of life. When resistance in Oran ceased at noon on Nov 10, the port was cluttered with ships either sunk by British naval gunfire or sabotaged....

(Above and Below) Casablanca, the Main Objective on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The landings were made at Fedala, farther north, in order to attack Casablanca overland partly because of its very strong defenses and partly because of the necessity of capturing the port in usable condition. Casablanca was a naval base. The US Navy had the mission of preventing French warships from interfering with the landings. American ships came under the fire of large coastal guns on...
