30-D-France-1918 — The historian of Company K, 117th Infantry, later recalled that “the night of the big barrage on Kemmel Hill was a night of discomfort and nervousness” among the men. Tension ran high in the trenches, where fatigue and strain sharpened every sound. One private remembered a sergeant cautiously advancing with his rifle toward what he believed to be a German raiding party in the rear—only to discover a trench rat slipping back into its hole. Yet once engaged in combat, the men found a renewed sense of purpose. As one noted, they “were happier than we had been for many months,” having faced battle without faltering under fire.
