5th Armored DivisionThe 5th Armored Division was activated at Fort Knox Kentucky, on October 1, 1941, and was moved to Camp Cooke California, on February 16, 1942. On August 14, the division participated in the Desert Training Center Armored Corps California Maneuvers and returned to Camp Cooke on November 19. On March 17, the division moved to Camp Forrest Tennessee, for the 2nd Army #1 Tennessee Maneuvers. (The Tennessee Maneuver Area was a training area in Middle Tennessee, comprising the following Counties: Bedford, Cannon, Clay, Coffee, Davidson, DeKalb, Franklin, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Moore, Putnam, Rutherford, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, Warren, White, Williamson, and Wilson. The area was selected because the terrain resembled France, Belgium, and Germany). The 5-AD moved then to the Indian Town Gap Mil Res Pennsylvania, on December 8, 1943; staged at Camp Kilmer New Jersey, February 1944, until it departed the New York POE on February 11, and arrived in England on February 24. The 5-AD landed in France on July 25, 1944, crossed into Luxembourg on September 2 and into Belgium on October 5. The Division finally entered Germany on December 1, returned to Belgium on December 24, to Holland on February 5, 1945, and re-entered Germany on February 25. Sent back to the USA, the 5-AD landed in New York on October 10, 1945, and was inactivated at Camp Kilmer New Jersey, on October 11, 1945.
