28th Infantry Division Combat Narrative

The Division landed in Normandy France on July 22, 1944, and entered the hedgerow struggle north and west of St Lô. Advancing slowly against determined German defenders, it took Percy on August 1, 1944, and overran Gathemo with 2-AD assistance on August 10. The division drove rapidly southward but its commander was killed on August 12. The division went into reserve except for the 109-IR which pushed toward the Forêt de Mortain. The division assembled in the Mortagne area and was moved up to clear Verneuil on August 22. It then followed in the wake of the 2-AD and paraded through Paris on August 29 on its way to assigned attack positions northeast of the French capital. The division crossed the Oise River at Pont Ste Maxence in the Chantilly-Compiègne area on August 31. It continued across France and passed through Belgium east of Sedan, and crossed into Germany from Luxembourg near Binsfeld on September 28, capturing the Our River bridge intact.

The 110-IR began hammering the West Wall west of Grosskampenberg on September 12, and both the 109-IR and the 110-IR breached it after overcoming heavy opposition two days later. The 110-IR assisted by engineers, seized key Hill 553 near Kresfeld on September 15. The 109-IR battled several days for Roscheid and the 110-IR seized Losenseifen Hill on September 16, but German resistance then ground the advance to a halt. The 112-IR with the 5-AD defeated strong German counterattacks against the Wallendorf Bridgehead on September 19. The division then moved north to Elsenborn on October 1 and returned to renew its attack on the West Wall on October 8, also detaching a battalion of the 110-IR on October 18 to fight at Aachen. On October 25, the division relieved the 9-ID and attacked Schmidt on November 2 after heavy artillery preparation. The division pushed into the Huertgen Forest and over the next few days, heavy fighting caused Vossenack and Schmidt to change hands several times. The division had to pull out the 112-IR on November 14 and on November 17 withdrew the 110-IR. The 8-ID relieved it on November 19 in the Vossenack-Schmidt sector, and the division moved to the Our River in Luxembourg to hold a 25-mile front and rest.

The German Ardennes Counteroffensive hit the division all along its front on December 16. The division was pushed out of Wiltz on December 19, and disorganized division elements were forced in many instances to infiltrate back to friendly lines. The remnants of the 110-IR blocked the Neufchâteau-Bastogne Highway on December 20 but this gave way under German assault on December 22. The 112-IR abandoned St Vith on December 23. The 17th A/B relieved the division in the Neufchâteau area on January 1, 1945, and the division then moved to defensive positions from Givet to Verdun along the Meuse River.

It relieved the 3-ID on February 18 and took command of the sector from the Sigolsheim to Le Valtin in preparation for offensive action against the Colmar Pocket. On February 1 it attacked and reached Colmar the day following, but tanks of the 5-AD swept past it to enter the city first. After mopping up Colmar which was completed on February 3. The division joined French armor blocking the Vosges in the region southwest of Colmar along the Ill River and the Fecht River. The division passed through the French 12-AD and crossed the Rhine-Rhone Canal on February 6, and relieved the 2-ID in line on February 20. It seized Schleiden on March 4 and began its push toward the Ahr River on March 6 as the 110-IR reached Zingsheim and the 112-IR reached Goldbach on the first day of the offensive. It reached the Ahr at Blankenheim on March 7 and assembled in the Nieder Mendig sector for rehabilitation and the holding of defensive positions along the Rhine. On April 13 it assumed occupation duty at Jelich, and on April 24 relieved the 36-ID at the Regierungsbezirk Saarland. It then took over responsibility for the military government of Saarland and Hessen west of the Rhine as well as Pfalz. The division was in this mode when hostilities were declared ended on May 7, 1945.
